CAFTAN

CAFTAN

Caftan, also referred to as kaftan, are historical garments that are still relevant in the world today. Originating in Mesopotamia, theywere worn by both women and men alike. Mesopotamia is often viewed as the cradle of civilization — and it was certainly the birthplace of the caftan. These popular clothing garments did not leave a piece of the world untouched as different cultures either adopted the caftan as a fashionable piece or adapted the caftan into something new. The Japanese adapted the caftan to create kimonos while the Chinese adapted to create hanfus.

Anna Yanofsky, well-known stylist and fashion historian, describes the caftan: “The structure of a caftan is really just loose fabric, attached to the shoulders with holes for the arms and the head. It’s the kind of garment that has been worn throughout history by lots of different cultures. The idea of taking loose fabric and covering the body is prevalent throughout the world.”

Caftans play a really big role in the history of clothing yet they are just as relevant in modern society as they were thousands of years ago. Popular celebrities like Beyoncé and Kate Moss have recently been seen wearing caftans.

Caftans are inclusive to every gender because they are made to fit every body type. While these pieces have been worn by royalty in the past, you will look comfortable and stylish as you wear one of the only clothing garments in the world that is suitable for every occasion.
